Appreciating Our Environment
The Community Outreach department has a busy spring and summer ahead as we continue to develop programming that will support and advocate for the Alton Park community. As we slowly return to normalcy on the back-end of the pandemic, many of our initiatives revolve around being outdoors. As a result, we’re now not only connecting with the Alton Park community, but battling against environmental injustice.
The development of our Alton Park CommUNITY Urban Farm and Market has resulted in soil tests and remediation efforts, which have successfully combated lead contamination, specifically. These endeavors have allowed our farm produce to be cultivated directly from the ground! This same produce is sold at the Alton Park CommUNITY Market, which is kicking off its grand opening on Saturday, May 1st!
Community Outreach has also started a community clean-up initiative that takes place every last Friday of the month; this initiative involves the Beth staff and participating partners walking around the community, collecting trash that has accumulated over time. We find this initiative to be a simple way to engage with Alton Park while ensuring we do our part to take care of the environment.
In light of Earth Day on April 22nd, we find these initiatives that work towards environmental justice to be of the utmost importance. We seek to respect the community while cherishing and valuing the inherent beauty that resides within Alton Park.
